FBE Format PNGFrançois Bujon de l’Estang, Ambassadeur de France, a créé FBE International Consultants en février 1993. Il en a assumé la présidence de 1993 à 1995, et en a repris la direction en janvier 2003, à son retour de Washington.

Diplômé de l’Institut d’Etudes Politiques de Paris et ancien élève de l’Ecole Nationale d’Administration (promotion Montesquieu, 1966), il est entré au Ministère des Affaires Etrangères en 1966 et a servi comme Chargé de Mission au Secrétariat Général de la Présidence de la République auprès du Général de Gaulle de 1966 à 1969, puis comme Premier Secrétaire à l’ambassade de France à Washington (1969-1973) et comme Conseiller à l’ambassade de France à Londres (1973-1975).

Conseiller pour les affaires internationales à la Délégation Générale à l’Energie de 1976 à 1978, il a ensuite rejoint le Commissariat à l’Energie Atomique en qualité de Directeur des Relations Internationales et Représentant de la France au Conseil des Gouverneurs de l’Agence Internationale de l’Energie Atomique (1978-1980). Il a ensuite été directeur du Cabinet de M. André Giraud, Ministre de l’Industrie, en 1980-81, dans le gouvernement de M. Raymond Barre.

En 1982, après avoir suivi l’Advanced Management Program de la Harvard Business School, il crée à Washington Cogema, Inc., filiale américaine de Cogema (aujourd’hui Areva), la plus grande société mondiale du cycle du combustible nucléaire. Il en est président et chief executive officer jusqu’en avril 1986.

Nommé ambassadeur à Mexico en 1986, il rejoint alors le Cabinet de M. Jacques Chirac, Premier Ministre, dont il sera le Conseiller pour les Affaires diplomatiques, la Défense et la Coopération jusqu’en mai 1988. Il occupera ensuite les fonctions d’ambassadeur au Canada (1989-1991).

Conseiller du président de la Compagnie de Navigation Mixte et de Via Banque et simultanément président de la SFIM (aujourd’hui intégrée dans Safran) en 1992, François Bujon de l’Estang crée en 1993 FBE International Consultants, société de conseil en stratégies internationales spécialisée dans le conseil géostratégique et l’analyse de risque politique, qu’il dirigera jusqu’à son départ à Washington dans l’été 1995.

François Bujon de l’Estang est nommé en juillet 1995 ambassadeur de France aux Etats-Unis, fonctions qu’il occupera, auprès de l’administration Clinton puis de l’administration Bush, jusqu’en décembre 2002. Il a été élevé à la dignité d’ambassadeur de France en 1999.

Il quitte le service diplomatique à son retour à Paris en janvier 2003, et rejoint Citigroup. Il a occupé pendant huit ans (2003-2010) les fonctions de Chairman de Citigroup France, puis en 2011 et 2012 de Senior International Advisor de Citi. Il a en même temps été membre de l’International et du European Advisory Board de Citi.

François Bujon de l’Estang est Officier de la Légion d’Honneur et Commandeur de l’Ordre National du Mérite. Outre ses fonctions  de président de FBE International Consultants, il est membre du Conseil Consultatif International de Total et du European Advisory Board de Citi, membre du Comité Exécutif et Président du Groupe français de la Commission Trilatérale,   Vice-Chairman de la French-American Foundation  (United States) et administrateur  de la French- American-Foundation (France). Il est en outre membre du Comité éditorial de la Revue des Deux Mondes, à laquelle il contribue régulièrement.

Il a été administrateur et vice-président de l’Institut Pasteur (2003-2005), administrateur de Thales (2003-2009), de Tembec Inc. (2004-2006) et du Centre National d’Etudes Spatiales (CNES, 2003-2010). Il a été par ailleurs président du Harvard Business School Club de France de 1992 à 1995.

FBE Format PNGFrançois Bujon de l’Estang is the founder and President of FBE International Consultants, which he created in Paris in 1993.

He joined the French Foreign Service in 1966 upon graduating from ENA, and was after a few months at the Quai d’Orsay appointed special Assistant to the Secretariat General of the Presidency of the Republic, where he was a deputy to General de Gaulle’s diplomatic advisor until President de Gaulle’s resignation in April, 1969. He then served as First Secretary at the French embassy in Washington (1969-1973), then as Counselor at the French embassy in London (1973-1975).

At the end of 1975, he became Advisor for International Affairs at the Directorate General for Energy (Ministry of Industry). In 1978 he joined the Atomic Energy Commissariat as Director of International Relations and soon after became simultaneously the French representative to the Board of Governors of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) in Vienna. He was then Chief of Staff of the Minister for Industry and Energy, André Giraud, in 1980-81.

In 1982, he started in Washington D.C. Cogema,Inc,, a fully-owned U.S. subsidiary of Cogema, the world’s largest nuclear fuel-cycle company (today merged into Areva). Mr Bujon de l’Estang remained president and CEO of Cogema,Inc. until 1986. He also served during those years as a director on the Board of Copperweld Corporation (Pittsburgh, Pa).

Appointed ambassador to Mexico in 1986, he was soon thereafter called by Prime Minister Jacques Chirac, in April, 1986 to be the Prime Minister’s Senior Diplomatic and Defense Advisor until May, 1988. He was then appointed ambassador to Canada (1989-1991).

He returned to Paris and the private sector in early 1992. He served as Senior Vice President with the Compagnie de Navigation Mixte and Via Banque in 1992, and simultaneously as Chairman of the Board of the military electronics company SFIM (now merged into Safran). M. Bujon de l’Estang created in 1992 FBE International Consultants, of which he was President and CEO until his appointment to Washington, and concurrently served as a director on the Board of Banque IndoSuez (1993-95).

M. Bujon de l’Estang was appointed in July, 1995, ambassador of France to the United States. He served in Washington D.C. under the Clinton, then the George W. Bush Administrations, until December, 2002.

Amb.Bujon de l’Estang retired from the Foreign Service upon leaving Washington, and joined Citigroup. He was for eight years (2003-2010) Chairman of Citi France and a member of Citi’s International and European Advisory Boards, then served as Senior International Advisor of Citi until April, 2012.

François Bujon de l’Estang is Officer of the Order of the Legion of Honor, and Commander of the National Order of Merit. He was elevated by the French government to the rank of Ambassador of France in 1999.

Besides being President of FBE International Consultants, he is a member of the International Advisory Board of Total, member of the Executive Committee and president of the French group of the Trilateral Commission, an is Vice-Chairman of the French-American Foundation (United States) and director of the French-American Foundation (France). He is also a member of the Editorial Board of the Revue des Deux Mondes, to which he regularly contributes columns on foreign affairs.

He has also been a director and Vice-Chairman of Institut Pasteur (2003-2005), and a director on the Boards of  Thales (2003-2009), of Tembec, Inc in Montreal, Canada (2004-2006), of the French Space Agency CNES (2003-2010) and of the Institut Français des Relations Internationales (IFRI) (2003-2010). He also was President of the Harvard Business School Club of France from 1992 to 1995.

He is a graduate of the Institut d’Etudes Politiques de Paris (« Sciences-Po »), of the Ecole Nationale d’Administration (« Montesquieu » class of 1966) and of the Harvard Graduate School of Business Administration (Advanced Management Program, 1982).
